Reshared post from Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama originally shared this post:

There is a saying in Tibetan that “at the door of the miserable rich man sleeps the contented beggar.” The point of this saying is not that poverty is a virtue, but that happiness does not come from wealth, but from setting limits to one’s desires, and living within those limits with satisfaction.

Please join the fledgling PDX Library User…

Please join the fledgling PDX Library User Experience Community of Practice (PDX LIB-UX) for a pre-meeting this Friday, January 20th, from 3-5pm.

Communities of practice are "groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly." (Wenger, 2006, http://www.ewenger.com/theory/)

PDX LIB-UX will meet monthly
3rd Fridays, 3-5pm
Lucky Lab SE (Hawthorne Blvd)

This month we are collecting future topics of interest and getting to know one another a bit. We will continue this at our first official meeting, Friday 2/17/12.

We're primarily interested in all aspects of user experience that impact libraries. This in no way should discourage anyone from attending. We welcome all interested parties, which may include designers, UX practitioners, content managers, and info nerds of all types.

We hope you love libraries, but you certainly don't need to work in one to join us! If you'd like more information on the Community of Practice model, we remind you that Wikipedia is a fantastic resource, but please wait until after the SOPA/PIPA blackouts to access this information.

Reshared post from Brian Matiash

I am essited for this, are you essited?

Plz remember that although these organizers routinely post amazing images, you are not competing with anyone. Just push yourself to walk, to see, to capture.

I'll be holdin it down with my favorite cobbled together from pieces/parts, junkstore/thrift store/toystore cams. You bring your favorite(s), we'll have a blast.

Come play with me, +Mika Martinez, and the rest of PDX Photowalk.

Announcing the grand ol' Google+ PDX Photowalk!

It's been in the making for a while and now I'm really excited to share the details of our Portland Google+ Photowalk. This plan was hatched together with my two cohorts, +Jeffrey Yen and +Ben Latterell. We tried to keep the premise straight forward. Everyone and anyone is welcome to join – the more, the merrier! And it happens to fall on the day after +Jeffrey Yen's birthday, so make your presence be your present ( nudge nudge )

The goal was to browse through a variety of scene types, offering something for everyone to shoot. At the end of the walk, we'll rendezvous at the Hair of the Dog Brewery for some good eats and drinks.

Now, this is Portland and, as such, we are holding the walk rain or shine. There are some really fantastic and relatively inexpensive camera covers out there to help protect your gear. Plus, rain always makes for awesome shots! :)

Prizes – I've got some sweet prizes lined up to give away at the end of the walk and we're also going to hold a photo contest after the walk ends with an even bigger prize for the winner!

If you're interested in attending, please leave a comment in this thread and I'll add you to our PDX Photowalk Circle.

You can find the details of the walk below:

When: Sunday, Jan 29th – Meet at 4:30PM

Where: Start at Union Station

Photowalk Maphttp://bit.ly/yt3P31

Description:
Starting Point – 4:30PM We will meet outside of the main entrance of the station, in the little park area.

We'll be taking a few turns from Union Station that will ultimately put us on NW 3rd Ave. We'll take 3rd Ave through Chinatown to get some cool architecture and street photos.

Next, we'll turn left on Burnside and cross the river via the Burnside bridge.

As we approach the east side of Portland, we'll exit the bridge onto the esplanade path heading southbound. This will put us in position for a nice sunset shoot. We can spread across the esplanade to get our shots.

We'll make a left off of the esplanade onto SE Hawthorne Blvd and make our way to the end point.

Make a left onto SE Water Ave and a right onto SE Yamhill St.

Our end point will be the Hair of the Dog Brewery to eat, drink, and chimp our shots.

I really hope to see as many of you there. Please feel free to share this post far and wide!
